Why police on horseback in NYC ?

So from the eighth floor I can hear a horse walking down the street, it is a police officer on horseback riding the wrong way down a one way street.

He walked the horse to the end of the street.

makes the horse do a side way walk like he is parallel parking him

then stand there on the horse watching traffic

Why?  Imagine how much it cost to take care of these animals.  I wonder how many there are on the force?

I lived in NYC as a child and they have always had police officers on horseback. I think it is because they can maneuver within the hoards of traffic easily. If you flew into NY you will know it was a sea of cabs when you came out of the tunnel into the city. It can be mayhem and the streets become a parking lot at times.

Living in Bklyn as a child there were police on horseback. The officer would stop and let us pet the horse. An experience growing up in NYC project.
They must still serve a purpose.
