Infinite Variety Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts

I found this quilt very interesting.  It is appliqued but has a secondary repeating pattern.  Was it used as a fund raiser?  Was it a signature quilt given to a fire chief as a gift?   Doesn't it look like the fireman emblem?






















 Can you see the date inked on this block?  1899.

I found that quilt most interesting, too. Have never seen another like it. I thought it was a cross pattern, but who knows?
